The short answer: studios pick alpaca hides because the fur carries no lanolin, so it reads matte under strobes instead of greasy; the long, straight fibre shows as clean texture rather than a blur; the colours sit on a white, cream, fawn and brown scale that does not fight the product; the hide holds its shape between frames; and it is light enough that one person moves it to the next set. Below: which size and colour for which shoot, the newborn safety rule, and how a studio hide stays looking new.
Newborn shoots
In newborn photography the hide is a backdrop, never a bed. The baby goes onto the hide only for the frame, with an adult's hand within reach the whole time, and comes back into a parent's arms as soon as the shot is done. A hide is not bedding: it does not belong in a cot, a pram or anywhere a baby sleeps.
The practical side: lay the hide over a posing bag, a basket or a beanbag with the fur facing the camera and let the baby settle into it; the long fur hides the edges of whatever is underneath. White or cream gives a soft, light ground on which skin tone stays true; a dark brown hide works as a single strong accent in a moodier series. The larger baby alpaca hide, up to 100 × 65 cm, covers a posing bag with room to spare. Shake the hide out and let it air after the session before it goes back on the shelf.
Product flat-lays
On a tabletop the hide earns its place as a surface, not the subject. The fur adds one soft layer that makes glass, ceramics, leather and metal look harder and cleaner by contrast. The rule is simple: light product on a dark hide, dark product on a light one. Candles, cosmetics in white tubes and pale ceramics sit on dark brown fur; jewellery, dark leather and black glass show up on a white or cream hide. A piebald hide is a pattern of its own and belongs in a lifestyle frame rather than under the product.
For a product table the small baby alpaca hide, up to 90 × 60 cm, is enough: it fits the table, keeps the edges out of frame and turns easily when you need the fur running the other way. For overhead shots comb the fur in one direction first, or the picture picks up patchy shading.
Interior and lifestyle sets
In an interior shoot the hide carries the room, so it has to match the room's tone. We hold hundreds of hides in stock and put together sets of three to six in one tone that read as a single surface: a row in front of a sofa, two hides under a dining table, a chair plus a floor hide. Tell us the tone and the count and we send photos of the actual hides before anything ships. The hides come straight from Cusco Stores in Peru. We are Cusco Stores' official partner in the EU.
For floor shots use the young alpaca hide (up to 110 × 75 cm) or a full pelt of 130 to 160 cm, priced on request. Chairs and armchairs take the larger baby hide; a bench or a bedside takes the young alpaca. The fur has a silky sheen but no grease, so under studio light it reads as a matte surface, which sheepskin with its lanolin does not. The hides are light, so one person moves a whole set without help.
How to keep a studio hide looking new
A studio hide passes through more hands than one at home, so care has to be quick and regular. After a shoot shake it out and air it in the shade, never in direct sun. Once a month comb it with a wide-toothed comb, following the fur. Spot-clean a mark with a damp cloth and mild soap; the hide is never washed or dried with heat. A vacuum on low, without the rotating brush, is fine. Store hides flat, fur up, never rolled: a rolled hide develops creases that show on camera. The full guide is in our care post.

Frequently asked questions
Can we rent hides for a shoot?
Not yet. If your studio would rather rent for a single session, write to us and we will talk it through; for now we sell.
Can you deliver by a set date?
Yes, by courier. Estonia 2 to 6 working days; Finland, Sweden, Latvia, Lithuania and Denmark 3 to 10 working days. Put the shoot date in the order note.
Do we get an invoice?
Yes, a VAT invoice for companies (VAT no. EE102884108). Trade prices are quoted for each request.
Can the baby sleep on the hide?
No. The hide is a posing surface for the length of the frame, with an adult beside the baby the whole time. It does not go in a cot, a pram or any sleeping place.
