An alpaca hide is lighter and silkier than a sheepskin: the fur is straight and lies flat instead of curling up. In a pale Scandinavian living room it reads calm, in a boho living room it reads warm. Below are the seven spots where our hides end up most often, with the size that actually fits each one and a link to the product.

1. Over a rattan or wooden chair

A sheepskin rug on a chair is the standard Scandi move. An alpaca hide does the same job at a fraction of the weight, so it stays on a rattan seat even when the chair is moved every day. A piebald pattern (white and brown) sits well next to wood and linen; plain white keeps the room quiet.

Which size fits: the small baby alpaca hide, up to 90 × 60 cm, covers the seat and the top of the backrest, 119 €.

2. On the sofa

On a grey sofa, lay the hide over one seat or over the armrest, fur facing the room. A cream and brown mix goes with grey without changing anything else. In winter you sit on it, in summer it moves to the backrest.

Which size fits: the medium baby alpaca hide, up to 100 × 65 cm, covers one seat, 139 €.

3. As a rug in front of the sofa

If a full-room rug feels like too much, put one hide in front of the sofa on top of a pale rug. That is where feet go and where the fur is actually felt. Two hides side by side give a wider patch; four in a row make a runner.

Which size fits: the young alpaca hide, up to 110 × 75 cm, 249 €.

4. Under the dining table

A black dining table, an oak floor and one dark brown hide underneath: this is where boho and Scandi meet. The hide goes between the chairs, not under the chair legs, so nobody drags the fur open every time they sit down. Crumbs shake out; nothing needs washing.

5. In the hallway by the mirror

The hallway is where a hide is seen first and stepped on in socks. A dark hide in front of a dark cabinet and a mirror hides dust and looks heavier than it is. Keep it a couple of steps back from the door, out of reach of wet shoes.

6. Beside a plant, in the boho corner

A boho living room lives on details: a palm, a white side table, rattan and one cream hide on the floor. The hide goes beside the plant stand, never under it, because watering and fur do not mix. Skip direct sun too; white fur yellows over time.

Which size fits: the small baby alpaca hide, up to 90 × 60 cm, 119 €.

7. On a stool by the window

A round wooden stool, window light and one white hide over the edge: the smallest spot on this list and the one that photographs best. Works on a piano stool and on a bench at the foot of the bed too. If the stool sits in full sun, turn the hide now and then.
