Alpaca Hides
Alpaca hides are the lightest and silkiest natural hides you can buy. A baby alpaca hide weighs under a kilo, the fur is long and straight and contains no lanolin, so it suits sensitive skin and a child's room. We sell three sizes: small baby alpaca hide up to 90 × 60 cm, medium up to 100 × 65 cm and young alpaca hide up to 110 × 75 cm. Why choose an alpaca hide
Alpaca fibre is partly hollow and traps air, so weight for weight the hide warms better than sheepskin. The long, smooth fur does not mat or shed the way reindeer hide does. No lanolin means the hide has no woolly smell and suits most people who find sheep's wool itchy. Each hide is from one animal: colour, pattern and exact size always vary a little, the product page lists the maximum dimensions.
Where alpaca hides come from
Alpacas are not raised for their hides; the animal is valuable alive and gives fleece every year. Our hides come from animals in the Andes lost to natural causes, most often in a harsh first winter. We do not buy or sell hides where the hide itself was the reason. This principle is set out in our story and applies to every product on this page. The hide is tanned traditionally, the back stays supple and the fur stays put.

How to care for an alpaca hide
Do not wash, do not heat, keep out of direct sun. Shake it, air it in the shade, comb once a month with a wide-toothed comb. Dab stains with a damp cloth and mild soap. Vacuum only on low power and without a rotating brush. The full guide is in our care article.
Can an alpaca hide go in a child's bed?
Yes, the small baby alpaca hide is made for it: lanolin-free, non-shedding, cleanable with a damp cloth. No fur of any kind is recommended in an infant's sleeping space without supervision, the same as blankets and pillows.
Is an alpaca hide warmer than sheepskin?
Weight for weight, yes. On the floor they feel similar, because the curly wool of a sheepskin is a thicker layer. On a chair or by the bed, where the hide is touched, the silky alpaca fur is clearly nicer.
